In ancient times, the Royal Knights served the Celestial Angels. However, they were betrayed and destroyed by Cherubimon when he was corrupted by Lucemon.

Two of the Royal Knights, Dynasmon and Crusadermon, were resurrected by Lucemon, and became his servants. He later betrays and deletes them..

Digimon Chronicle and X-Evolution

The twelve Royal Knights, led by Omnimon, were servants of King Drasil, the server on which the Digital World was housed. When King Drasil released the X-Program to cull the Digital World's population, the Royal Knights were employed to delete the Digimon that became immune to the program via the X-Antibody.

During the campaign, Gallantmon became convinced the genocidal campaign was wrong, and came to the aid of the mysterious Dorumon. Dorumon was eventually revealed as the prophesied Thirteenth Knight, their destined leader, Alphamon.

Digimon Data Squad

The twelve Royal Knights, led by Omnimon, were servants of King Drasil, the server on which the Digital World was housed. King Drasil sends Kentaurosmon to Earth, in his Rookie form Kudamon, where he becomes the partner of Richard Sampson, the leader of DATS. When King Drasil decides to destroy Earth, the Royal Knights are sent loose on it--Kentaurosmon turns against his comrades, and fights for Earth's survival. He convinces the rest of the Knights of the justness of his cause.
